Does Maharashtra's Solar Storage Rule Apply to You? A Three-Question Check
From 1 April 2026, new solar above 100 kW in Maharashtra cannot connect to the grid without storage of at least 50% of capacity for 2 hours. Three yes-or-no questions tell you if you are covered.
Solar above 100 kW in Maharashtra? Without a battery, there is now no grid connection. From 1 April 2026, new solar projects above 100 kW in the state cannot connect to the grid without energy storage.
If you are planning a solar project in Maharashtra, a 30-second check tells you whether the rule applies to you. It matters before you sign anything: if your project is covered, the battery is part of what it takes to get connected, not an add-on you can decide on later.
The 30-second check
Answer these three questions:
- Is it a new solar project?
- Is it above 100 kW?
- Is it in Maharashtra?
Three yeses means storage is mandatory
If all three answers are yes, battery storage is no longer optional. Under the MERC requirement effective 1 April 2026, the project needs storage with a power rating of at least 50% of its capacity and a duration of at least 2 hours.
- Effective date: 1 April 2026 (MERC)
- Minimum power: 50% of project capacity
- Minimum duration: 2 hours
The mandate is the floor, not the ceiling
It is easy to read this as a compliance cost and size the battery to the bare minimum. But sized right, that battery is not just a compliance cost: it can be the best-returning asset in the project. The mandate sets the floor for what you must build, not the ceiling on what the battery can earn.
If you ticked all three, the next step is to model the project with your own load and tariff. Ingro Sims handles sizing, siting and commercials in a few minutes at sims.ingroenergy.com.
