On 28 April 2025, Spain and Portugal went dark in 90 seconds.
Not because there was not enough power. Spain was generating 32 GW against 25 GW of demand and exporting to three countries. The grid had supply — but zero voltage control left.
Supply is not the same as stability
53% of generation was solar, all locked in fixed-power mode, unable to respond to a voltage spike. Inverter-based generation delivers energy, but whether it also delivers grid services — reactive power, voltage regulation, inertia-like response — depends on how it is configured and what it is required to provide.
On that day, a very large share of the fleet was contributing the first and none of the second.
The defence plan fired for the wrong threat
When the cascade started, the defence plan kicked in — designed for a shortfall of energy, not a collapse of voltage control. 15 GW vanished in 5 seconds. 50 million people lost power. Full restoration took until the early hours of 29 April.

The finding that matters
The investigation concluded the blackout resulted from failures of voltage governance — not from renewable energy as such. That distinction is the whole lesson. A grid can run on a very high share of inverter-based resources; it cannot run on inverter-based resources that have not been asked to hold the voltage up.
What it implies for storage
Storage is one of the few assets on a modern grid that can supply and absorb reactive power on command, hold voltage locally, and respond in the sub-second window where a cascade is either arrested or not. But only if the control layer is designed to do it — and only if the grid code requires it before the event, not after.
