When a node goes offline, one alarm fires. It does not tell you whether the cause is in the battery, the communication layer, or the network infrastructure. Those failure modes look identical on the way in. They require completely different responses.

The consequence: misallocated response

The result is that the highest-severity event and the lowest-severity event sit in the same queue. A cascade actively destroying a circuit board waits behind a timeout that was always going to resolve itself.

No amount of operator discipline fixes this, because the operator is working from the same undifferentiated signal. The triage decision has to be made before the alarm is raised, not after.

The failure mix shifts as the system ages

What the EMS needs to catch in year three is not what it needed to catch at commissioning. Early life is dominated by integration and communication faults; later life by cell divergence, thermal behaviour and connection degradation.

A monitoring configuration frozen at handover is progressively mismatched to the system it is watching.

What changes with diagnosis at the EMS layer

The single-alarm model guarantees misallocated response. What changes is when the EMS diagnoses the fault — separating battery, communication and network causes from correlated signals — before an engineer opens a log.

Uptime is not a setting. It is a continuous discipline.
