An energy management system sits between the battery, the power conversion system and the grid, and it has to speak to equipment from vendors who never designed for each other. Protocol mismatches, register maps that differ from the documentation, and timing behaviour that only appears under load are all discovered somewhere — the only question is whether that somewhere is a factory floor or an energised site.

Doing the integration and validation in a controlled environment first is what turns commissioning from an investigation into a checklist.
